1.7 Summary
Leadership is making a positive difference and it can happen (or not) at every level within an organization. The purpose of leadership is to enable the accomplishment of things greater than one can do alone. This may also include developing leadership competence in others.
Developing Our Definition of Leadership
Leadership has been discussed for millennia from the time of Plato and before to the modern day. There are many aspects and dimensions of leadership which become more or less emphasized by the perspective or lens that one is using to describe leadership. An exhaustive review of the many definitions of leadership reveal that there are several key themes. Leadership consists of (1) envisioning a new future, (2) engendering shared purpose and trust, and (3) influencing, inspiring, lifting, and empowering others toward accomplishing a common goal. Given this, we define leadership as follows:
Leadership is creating a positive vision of the future, building relationships of trust, and inspiring, orchestrating and empowering a group of followers to make that vision a reality.
Society Needs Leadership
Extraordinary things can happen when a gifted leader steps up. Society has a need for leaders who will help us see a new vision and inspire us toward overcoming the many economic, technological, environmental, and quality-of-life problems that humans face in the world today. This is the leadership challenge – and we believe that anyone from any walk of life can be a part of meeting this challenge.
What makes a great leader? Historical leadership theories suggest that great leaders have developed distinct core internal characteristics, traits, and dispositions. They also have developed specific behavioral skills through practice and experience. Great leaders understand that certain behaviors work better in certain situations and they are attuned to the deep-seated needs and aspirations of their followers and the changing landscape of their environments.
You may be excited about stepping up and stepping out as a leader. On the other hand, you may be hesitant about your ability to grow as a leader and really make a difference. Rest assured that leadership can be developed and that people can and do change in ways that are surprising. In the end, developing as a leader is a choice. As Vince Lombardi said, "Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal."
The Know, Do, Be Model of Leadership Development
This course is built on the "Know, Do, Be" model of leadership development. Knowledge about leadership is necessary, but not sufficient. In addition to having knowledge, a leader must have skill and heart. Skill is the ability to "do" leadership. Heart encompasses the internal character and core beliefs that guide action and engender fortitude to overcome in the face of obstacles. These three components – know, do, and be – will not only help you develop as a leader, but will sustain you as a leader for the long run.
You have likely had moments of greatness in your life and perhaps you would like to replicate these more often. If so, engage with us in this journey of your own leadership development.
